SEPAcode generates EPC QR codes, which can be scanned with many European banking apps. Countries with high adoption include Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Finland.

EPC QR codes are sometimes also called Girocode or Stuzza QR-code. To scan them in a banking app, look for scan QR code, photo transfer, SEPA QR payment, or behind the camera symbol.

The EPC QR code standard is defined by the European Payments Council (EPC). SEPAcode uses this standard to encode the recipient name, IBAN, amount, and payment reference.

When an EPC QR code is scanned with a compatible banking app, the payment details are automatically populated for a SEPA transfer. No manual typing of long IBAN numbers. The information can be reviewed and adjusted before confirming the payment.

EPC QR codes do not contain confidential information or authorization mechanisms. They simply facilitate the transfer of payment details and help reduce the risk of errors. The actual payment is always processed securely within a certified banking app.

Since October 2025 all European banks are required to offer SEPA instant credit transfers, which enable customers to send and receive transfers in less than ten seconds.

Typically, banking apps provide an option to enable instant transfers for individual payments. This service allows SEPA transfers to be used in situations where immediate confirmation is required.
